How to master the healing power of mirror work

How to master the healing power of mirror work

Made popular by thought leader Louise Hay, mirror work is a method for learning how to love yourself and others. Not only can it help to relieve grief, find forgiveness, and build your self-esteem, you will also begin to see the world as a more loving place. For all of these reasons, mirror work may be very effective for healing whatever emotional trials you are going through right now.

Why it works

For many of my clients, when they first start doing mirror work, they feel a bit uncomfortable making eye contact with themselves in the mirror. This could be because they aren’t used to receiving genuine, loving compliments graciously. Or perhaps they are working through self-esteem issues or a feeling of being undeserving of kindness.

Before long, they become accustomed to the activity, and that’s when they start seeing positive results. One of my clients remarked that she was able to really find an emotional connection with herself that she hadn’t had the confidence for in the past. Once she broke through that barrier, she felt a new inner strength and self-assurance. She was able to be herself – and shine!

How to master the healing power of mirror work

1. Connect with your heart center

Start by quieting your mind, perhaps closing your eyes. Take a few deep breaths and reach within. Find that peaceful place inside you and connect with your inner wisdom.

2. Look into the mirror and make eye contact

Don’t worry if you haven’t yet showered or washed your face. This is YOU. The real, raw YOU. That’s the part that you want to work with, so put any vanity aside.

3. Recite your self-love affirmations out loud

Mirror work uses positive affirmations, a technique that is incredibly effective for manifesting personal transformation. By reciting them out loud you are declaring to the Universe that they are your truth. You’re also stating them to your subconscious, which is always listening to what you say – whether it’s positive or negative.

Here are a few positive affirmations you can use to get started. You can take them just as they are, but consider using them as a guideline to write your own personalized affirmations.

  • I love and accept myself exactly as I am. (Louise Hay)
  • Every day I do the very best I can, and that is enough.
  • I am loved, loving, and lovable. (Louise Hay)
  • I am beautiful in every way.
  • I love my body because it houses the sacred being that I am. (Dr. Wayne W. Dyer)
  • I can accomplish anything I put my mind to.

The power of “I love you”

In her book, You Can Heal Your Life, Louise Hay recommends saying “I love you” to yourself while gazing into your eyes during mirror work. It seems simple, but sometimes talking to ourselves in a loving way can be difficult. However once you do it a few times, it becomes much easier.

When I started doing mirror work, I had a lot of difficulty saying “I love you” to myself in the mirror. I think a lot if it was the guilt and self-blame I carried from my divorce. The interesting thing is, the more I did it, the less intensely I felt those self-harming, unwanted emotions. In time, I was able to get over them and heal, thanks to those three little words!

Consistency is key

As with any healing practice, you need to keep consistent with it in order to see positive results. I prefer to do mirror work in my bathroom when I’m getting ready for my day, and then again while getting ready for bed. When I first started I even put a little post it on the mirror to remind myself. Use whatever tools you need to, to help you remember to do your mirror work regularly.
