How to love and care for your inner child

How to love and care for your inner child - Jen Merkel Holistic Hypnosis and Wellness

Even as adults, we carry with us emotions from experiences we had during our developmental years. Spiritually, this is known as your “inner child” and it is crucial to nurture this part of ourselves. Today I’m sharing how to love and care for your inner child.

It’s important to nurture your inner child

Your inner child is that fragile part of you that carries insecurity, sadness, mistrust, grief, shame, and other emotions learned from early ages. Showing this child that you love and care for them will help you to find healing and overcome those emotions.

If you are a parent yourself, you will find that healing your inner child will also help you to be a better mom or dad. Finding understanding, acceptance, and unconditional love for yourself will help you to be more compassionate with your own children.

It takes work but it’s worth it!

Forging down this long and difficult road can be challenging. But at the end, you’ll be rewarded with a true feeling of unconditional self-love and acceptance. You’ll find that you are able to live as your authentic self.

How to love and care for your inner child

There are many ways to heal your inner child. These are some of my top recommendations, in no particular order.

Age regression therapy

Using hypnosis, we can revisit your childhood and explore the origins of your unwanted emotions. Once we know where they came from, we are able to change how your subconscious processes those feelings. Then consciously, when a difficult situation occurs, you will be able to handle it in an emotionally-healthy way.

Write your inner child a letter

If you already have a journaling practice, adding entries about your inner child will be a natural process for you. Alternatively, you can write a letter to your inner child.

As you write, think about what you would want to say to that “little you”, including encouraging words and positive messages. Reassure them that they are not at fault for the things that happened and that they did the very best they could given the situation. Show compassion and let them know that you are OK now as an adult.

Positive affirmations

Affirmations a very effective way to manifest the feelings you desire to have within. For inner child work, concentrate on the emotions that stem from your early days.

As with all affirmations, keep them positive and in the present tense. Here are a few examples to get you started:

  • I am protected by Divine Love.
  • It is safe for me to be vulnerable.
  • I give myself permission to have fun and play.
  • I love and accept myself exactly as I am.

You can visit your inner child during meditation as well. Reach out to them and invite them to join you in your “happy place” for a conversation. As you interact with them, consider the following: What would you like your inner child to know? What message would your inner child like you to know? Close out the meditation session by giving your inner child a loving hug.

Get playful!

Get playful!

Why not revisit your childhood? Make a list of some things you enjoyed as a child. What hobbies did you have? Which toys and games did you play? What movies and television shows did you watch? What music did you enjoy? Spend some time revisiting these happy memories by enjoying these things as an adult.

One of my favorite ways to scratch this itch is to go to a swap meet or antique shop. There, I’m certain to find all kinds of treasures that remind me of things that remind me of my childhood. Those that bring up the most treasured memories (like the things similar to what my Grandmother had in her home) will often make their way home with me.
