Affirmation: I do things in moderation to keep my mind, body, and soul healthy and well
The Devil Tarot card is a warning that we're overindulging and it's time to check ourselves

This week’s affirmation is based on the Devil Tarot card as drawn for our July Tarot reading.

The Devil card in Tarot is another one of those “scary” seeming cards (like the Death card we had last week) but it really serves as a warning that we need to check ourselves.

The Devil Tarot card is a sign that we’re overindulging and it’s getting the better of us. It’s about being materialistic, selfish, and overdoing it with life’s pleasures. This can mean overspending, eating too many decadent foods, having a lot of sex, or even just binge-watching trashy television shows. It’s about the seven deadly sins: pride, envy, gluttony, greed, lust, sloth, and wrath.

You might notice that in the imagery of the Rider-Waite deck ⬅️, the man and woman are being ‘held prisoner’ by the Devil. But what they are ignoring is that they have total control of this – they could actually slip out of those chains anytime they wanted to.

Perhaps they are choosing not to because they prefer to stay in their place of lavishness and comfort, with an “ignorance is bliss” attitude. It could be that they are unconsciously accepting of the consequences – financial troubles, excess weight, depression, relationship issues, etc. – because it’s easier to just stay where they are than to break free and so the work to make a positive change within themselves.

Our conscious mind knows full well what’s best for us. It also knows that it’s not bad to indulge once in a while – but again this card is about letting it get away from us. We need to make conscious choices that will result in what’s better for our own health and welfare, rather than turning a blind eye and avoiding the discomfort of change.

So now it’s time to ask yourself:

  • What am I overindulging it at this point of my life?
  • What should I be cutting back on in order to maintain a healthy mind, body, and soul?
  • What is stopping me from doing what’s best for me?
  • How can I motivate myself to make the positive changes I want in my life?
