6 books that will change your life: Check out these titles for a lasting, positive change

I fully admit, I am a nonfiction junkie. Sometimes I have to force myself to read fiction works because there are so many great “self help” books out there. I get overloaded because I enjoy learning about new things. Getting new ideas and improving myself are a personal passion.

It’s hard to tell from a book’s description how good or affective it actually is. So today I’m sharing 6 books that will change your life – they certainly changed mine! BTW – these are not in any particular order.

Ask and it is Given: Learning to Manifest Your Desires – Esther and Jerry Hicks

Esther Hicks channels a spiritual being collectively known as Abraham. Abraham’s wisdom from the Spiritual Realm is focused on how to help us, as earthly beings, to manifest what we want into our “experience”.

The basic principle is that we need to keep your focus on gratitude for what we have. It’s important to put out of our minds anything that we don’t want. This is because what we focus our attention on is what the Universe will send our way.

The book goes into great depth about this concept. But more importantly, it includes a multitude of tools and exercises you can use to keep your mind focused on your desired outcome. And it really works.

How this book changed my life: I have been able to use Abraham’s principles and methods to manifest a new job, a move to another state, a new apartment in a great community, money, vacations, healing relationships, and so much more.

The Book of Awesome – Neil Pasricha

Back in 2011, when Facebook was still a baby (I miss those days!), someone posted Neil Pasricha’s TED Talk. I was drawn in as I listened to the charismatic Pasricha describe how his life had fallen apart in 2008-09. His marriage ended, and shortly afterwards a close friend committed suicide. He desperately needed to find a way to focus on the positive aspects of life. Collectively, this was quite elusive for all of us, as this particular time period was filled with economic and environmental disasters.

Pasricha decided to start a blog called 1000AwesomeThings.com where he began posting one awesome thing each weekday for 1000 days. That’s almost 4 years!. This gave him (and his followers like me) a new perspective: find appreciation in “everyday” things, instead of taking them for granted. And although it seemed slow-going at first, eventually the witty and humorous website went viral. He put together the posts from the now-defunct blog, and assembled them into book form, hence The Book of Awesome.

Some examples to whet your appetite:

  • Watching The Price Is Right when you’re home sick.

Since this book was published, Pasricha has written several other successful and enjoyable books. But there is a special place in my heart for this particular title. It’s about taking time to enjoy the sweetest moments during this brief time we have here on Earth.

How this book changed my life: For me, the Book of Awesome was an introductory lesson in gratitude and taking things for granted. It was also my first exposure to the idea that you make your own happiness. You can choose to have a bad day, or a good day – and it’s 100% your choice.

You Can Heal Your Life – Louise Hay

If you’ve been following me for any length of time, you’ve probably heard me praise this classic book several times. In April of 2019 I took a trip to Abaco, The Bahamas in search of healing. I had just finalized a brutal, dramatic, expensive divorce from a very bitter man. I was experiencing severe anxiety attacks almost daily. My bank account was being drained from attorney fees. Worst of all, there was a lot of collateral damage to the relationships I had with close relatives, including my own adult children.

I decided to use You Can Heal Your Life as my guide to conduct my own personal “healing retreat”. Each day I spent a couple hours working through a few chapters at a time, sometimes on my rented condo’s balcony overlooking the picturesque marina, and sometimes on a postcard-like deserted tropical beach. I had read this book before, but this time it was different. (1) I was at a different place in my life, and (2) I resolved to doing the exercises within the book. This was something I hadn’t done before, and it turned out to be the key to success for me.

While reading the book, I discovered that the issues I needed to work through weren’t just from my failed marriage. They actually stemmed from experiences in early childhood, teen years, and my twenties as well.

You Can Heal Your Life really did change my life. I learned so much about myself, and especially about forgiveness. As recommended in the book, I started using affirmations daily (and I still do!). Some of these are written by Louise Hay herself. I often use the book as a reference when working with hypnosis clients. Hay includes a section on how our emotional difficulties manifest in different areas of our physical bodies. This is very helpful for anyone experiencing any type of malady.

If you choose just one book on this list – this is the one to get! I recommend you get the paperback edition (rather than the digital version) so you can more easily do the exercises. That is what will really make all the difference!

How this book changed my life: I finally learned how to release the expectations I had of myself and others. I was able to truly forgive and accept people for who they are – including myself.

The Year of Less – Cait Flanders

One of my favorite books to gift anyone, The Year of Less is written by a young lady who was in her 20s at the time. She was in serious debt, drinking excessively, and addicted to online shopping.

She knew she had to make a change, so she started her own personal campaign. Live with less: less spending, and less “stuff”.

Cait went through all her things and got rid of those that she didn’t use or need. As she shed those unnecessary items, she began to feel a freedom that she had never had before. As a bonus, she was able to actually start saving money for her future.

Set up sort of like a journal, the lessons Cait learned along the way are super helpful to the reader, especially one whose bank account may be suffering from the convenience of online retailers.

This is not extreme minimalism. It’s more like a positive, thoughtful life change. If you’re like me, you’ll become motivated to clear away the things in your life which no longer serve you.

How this book changed my life: It helped me to see that all the “stuff” I was accumulating was symbolic of what I thought my ideal “self” was. I learned how to let go of those thoughts and be happy with the person that I am.

Goddesses Never Age: The Secret Prescription for Radiance, Vitality, and Well-Being – Dr. Christiane Northrup

As a Board-certified OB/GYN, Dr. Christiane Northrup knows women’s bodies. But Northrup is no ordinary physician – she brings a bit of a spiritual vibe into her works, which focus on the health and wellness of women.

In Goddesses Never Age, Northrup teaches us that we don’t need to “grow old” – nor do we need to accept ill health. When we have the proper mindset, we are able to rejoice in what makes us uniquely beautiful.

The book includes sections on sex, vitality, how to love others without losing yourself, maintaining your authenticity, and self-love. She also adds information on how to keep your physical body looking and feeling youthful.

How this book changed my life: It taught me that age really is just a number. My number is just a record of how many years I’ve spent on this planet, in this lifetime. When I turned 50, I didn’t have to settle into my rocking chair and start knitting socks! (Unless I wanted to!)

The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love that Lasts – Gary Chapman

As a marriage counselor, Gary Chapman has worked with a countless number of couples over the years, and discovered one thing. There are five “love languages” that people gravitate toward: Words of affirmation, quality time, receiving gifts, acts of service, and physical touch.

Each person has one primary and one secondary love language. While reading the book, you begin to learn what each love language really means – what someone with that particular love language is looking for from anyone.

When we understand our partner’s love language, it helps us to give them what they need from us. Knowing our own helps us to know what to ask for in a relationship.

And it’s not just for couples! Understanding the five love languages can help you with any relationship. In fact, while I was reading this book I was divorced and not dating. You can use these principles to help heal relationships at work, with your kids or parents, with friends, family members, even the crabby old neighbor across the street!

How this book changed my life: When I was reading this book, I was struggling with feeling unloved and unsupported by my adult son. After learning that my son’s love language was Physical Touch, I came to realize that he actually was showing love and affection to me in his own way. During a weekend visit, I had cooked a huge, costly dinner for him and his family (my love language being Acts of Service). He wasn’t much for giving me a verbal “thank you”, but he did provide plenty of hugs of all forms and sizes while I was staying there. This was his way of showing his love for me, and I also knew that repaying him with warm hugs would be the best way to reciprocate.
