How to smudge your space for positive energy

How to smudge your space for positive energy - Jen Merkel Holistic Hypnosis and Wellness

Have you ever entered a room and felt the energy is stagnant? Or maybe even feel a bad vibe? Maybe your home was recently serviced by someone that gave off some bad energy. Or maybe you had a disagreement with someone and can’t seem to shake off the feeling. Perhaps you received some bad news by phone and now the energy in the room feels… blech.

Whatever the case, you can freshen up the energy in the air by smudging. Smudging is purifying a space by burning a plant material. During the burning process, the smoke attaches itself to your intention as well as the unwanted energy, which it carries away, leaving behind clear and cleansed air.

Why would I need to smudge?

The ritual of smudging removes unwanted energies and leaves the space purified. Any heavy, dark feeling will be lifted and the space will feel clearer, lighter, and brighter.

I smudge my entire Spirit Room to make a sacred space before readings, hypnotherapy sessions, meditations, and rituals where I am inviting in Spirit, Angels, Guides, and Ancestors.

How often should I smudge?

Regular smudging will keep the energy clear in your home, but the frequency will be up to you to determine. When you first move into a house, you might find that you’ll need to smudge it every couple of days to banish the energy from the previous residents. After a while, weekly or monthly smudging may be sufficient.

I like to do my regular “whole home” smudging during the new moon, since that is a time for releasing, and occurs at least once a month. As part of this ritual, I also pass the smoke over my crystal collection to clear their energy, as well as my own personal space to clear my aura’s energy.

Since I work from my home, I also clear the energy before and after every client appointment.

You might want to set a reminder on your calendar, or just do it when you feel it is needed – there is no right or wrong answer.

What tools do I need to smudge?

All you really need are four things:

  1. Something to burn (see below)
  2. A lighter or lit candle (matches are quick to burn so not recommended)
  3. A dish, abalone shell, or something else to catch any stray embers and avoid the need to call in the fire department
  4. Optional: A large feather (turkey feathers work well) to help move the smoke into the space
  5. Your intention <– the most important thing!

Although sage is incredibly popular for smudging, did you know there are many other options?

  • Sage – cleanses and purifies so it’s good for when there has been a disagreement in a space and you want to “reset” the energy.
  • Palo Santo – reduces stress, headaches, anxiety, and depression. Excellent for unwinding after a tough day at work.
  • Rosemary – use it to bring in beauty, healing, peace, and powerful feminine energy. A good choice when honoring any female ancestors or angels. Rosemary is one of my personal favorites to smudge with!
  • Cedar Wood – popular for new home blessings as it eliminates negative energies and bring in positive ones.
  • Rose Petals – brings love and peace to a space so it’s great for romance, fertility, or welcoming a new baby. Also a fantastic choice for any self-care ritual.
  • Lavender – combats insomnia and anxiety, brings peace and happiness. Burn it in your bedroom before bedtime for a restful night’s sleep.
  • Pine needles – used for protection, physical and emotional healing, and in religious ceremonies.
  • Juniper – brings energy to the mind and body, so it would be a perfect choice for an office or study space, or before an exam or job interview.
  • Mugwort – brings good dreams. Burn it in your kids’ bedrooms before tucking them in at night.
  • Bundles – You can mix and match any of these things. In fact, you will find there are several vendors that sell items in bundles.

Each of these options has certain things they are commonly used for, but you can really use any of them for “general” purposes. It is, after all, your intention that sets the purpose of the smudging.

How do I smudge?

Step one: Set your overall intention

You may wish to say it out loud but even just thinking it and letting the Universe know what your intention is will be enough. You might keep it general, like clearing and cleansing the energy in your space. Or you may wish to be more specific, like clearing your bedroom after recovering from an illness. You can have multiple intentions, but I recommend keeping it to no more than three, so the energy can stay focused.

Step two: Light it up!

Depending on what you’re using, you may have to hold the item over the flame for as much as a minute or more. You’ll want to make sure the item has a slow, red internal burn. Make sure the item is smoking, but you don’t want an active flame – if that happens, just carefully blow it out, making sure there aren’t any stray embers to burn anything unintentionally.

Step three: Smudge away!

With the dish under the item to catch any embers, move about the space and allow the smoke to waft to the areas you want to cover (or use the feather to fan it toward the space). Don’t obsess over getting the smoke into every little spot – just imagine it moving into every corner and crevice, and that intention will take care of it. Don’t forget about closets, pantries, your shower/tub, etc. Depending on the size of your space, you might have to re-light the item. Tip: Take caution around your smoke detectors!

Step four: Set your final intention

Now that you’ve cleared the space, don’t leave it empty! If you leave it open and vulnerable, anything could take over. You definitely want to keep control of what moves into the space. But don’t worry, all you have to do is use your intention to fill it in. I like to say something like, “Fill this space with peace, happiness, love, and prosperity.”

Step five: “Seal” the space

This process closes off the space and acts as an official end to the ritual. You can seal it in a few different ways:

  • Use your intention
  • Use a sound, such as a singing bowl, a chime, or just clapping your hands
  • My preferred way: Moving the burning item in an “infinity” symbol ♾️ three times.

Of course, when you are all done, make sure the item you used is no longer burning, for safety’s sake.

When to hire a professional

Now you know how to do a smudging, but it’s still a good idea to have a professional do a regular clearing once in a while.

  • Annually during Spring cleaning or New Year’s Day
  • When moving into a new home or office
  • As a wedding or birthday gift
  • When a new baby is brought home
  • After house guests or a roommates have departed
  • After someone has passed away

I would love to do a space clearing for your home or office. I also LOVE doing space clearings for new couples as a wedding gift! Contact me for details and to get on my schedule.
